Scientific & Geological Information

• Formation: Sheen obsidian is created when molten volcanic material cools rapidly, resulting in a glassy substance instead of a crystalline one.

• Cause of sheen: As the lava moves and then solidifies, layers of gas bubbles or tiny mineral inclusions like hematite and magnetite become trapped and aligned. These layers reflect light, giving the obsidian its golden or silver sheen.

• Silicon dioxide generally constitutes 70% or more of the total composition, akin to the igneous rocks granite and rhyolite.
